Cold light, warm light. What does this mean?
"Hot" light and "cold" light: by what criteria?
On the boxes of ordinary halogen lamps as on the labels of LED lamps, the mentions "hot color" or "cold color" are ubiquitous. Despite their apparent meanings, these terms actually evoke the sensation felt by the observer in relation to the color emitted by the light source. These appellations do not, therefore, designate the sensation due to the rise in temperature caused by the lighting.
Rather, it is called the color temperature or the color of the light, whose intensity is measured in Kelvin K. This index makes it possible to estimate whether the white light is cold - in other words, closer to the shades of blue - or hot. That is if the white light is closer to the shades of yellow (and red).
The color temperature is, therefore, an important index for measuring the degree of whiteness of natural light or light emitted by an artificial source.
Applications of the concepts of hot or cold lights:
The type of light emitted by a lighting source weighs on the decor of the room, but above all has a great influence on the sensations, the energy and the biological clock in general of the occupants.
A warm white light - which is closer to solar lighting at the end of the day - thus promotes relaxation. The temperature of this color is below 3,300 K. Similarly, a neutral white light, whose temperature varies between 3,300 and 5,300 K, is energizing and improves tone. Above a 5000 K color temperature, the lighting is more like daylight. This type of color, like all other cool colors, encourages the concentration and balance of energies in the body and mind.
From a practical and biological point of view, therefore, warm light includes all color temperatures that are compatible with rest, relaxation and the abandonment of physical or brain activities. The cold light corresponds to the color temperatures associated with the periods of great activities. These two concepts are worth remembering when it comes time to select the color temperature of the lighting of each room in the house, depending on its type and frequency of use.
